Grignard

The Grignard reaction is an organometallic chemical reaction in which alkyl, allyl, vinyl, or aryl-magnesium halides (Grignard reagent) are reacted with electrophilic carbonyl compounds such as aldehydes, ketones or esters to produce the corresponding alcohols.

The reaction of an organic halide with magnesium is not a Grignard reaction, but provides a Grignard reagent. Grignard reagents are also important for the preparation of boron derivatives, which are subsequently used in the Suzuki coupling reaction.
